Subject: A massive work
Subject: A massive work
These five volumes were published roughly over the span of a decade. The first two are huge; the remaining three much smaller. They are a massive resource for one dealing with the New Testament in Greek. All this is good.
Unfortunately there are some problems:
1. The typesetting was not good. As a result, the book (hard copy or digital) is hard to read. After a while, it may give you a headache unless you set the magnification high.
2. The text does not match the commentary. The text is Textus Receptus, while the commentary is tuned to W & H. This is a minor irritant, but does complicate using it.
3. The grammar notes are a bit dated. Some of the Koine constructions are now called by different names. A century of research has also made some of the grammar comments obsolete. Even the old standby for New Testament Greek grammar, BDF, differs from this commentary.
The above concerns mean that the reader should also have some modern works when using these 5 volumes. On the other hand, these volumes often bring out a lot of early church exegesis (in Greek) that is ignored in modern treatments (both Greek and English).
I commend the effort that went into these volumes, for it was massive. I commend the idea behind the commentary, for it was good. The first two criticisms are nit-picky, but they do negatively impact the digital reader. The third is more serious, but it is true of many older works - theories change over time. I am glad that Internet Archive lists this among its digital library, for it is a work that should be preserved, despite the drawbacks for the modern reader.
